Unicode vs ASCII

ASCII covers 128 values for basic Latin text and controls. Unicode assigns code points to characters across writing systems. UTF-8 is an encoding that turns Unicode text into bytes.

Compare ASCII, Unicode and UTF-8

Character standards and byte encoding compared
TermPurposeExample
ASCIIA 7-bit character set and encodingA has value 65 (hex 41)
UnicodeA standard assigning character code pointsA is U+0041; é is U+00E9
UTF-8A variable-length Unicode byte encodingA → 41; é → C3 A9

The same character can have different byte representations depending on the encoding. A code point such as U+00E9 identifies a character; it does not mean the UTF-8 bytes are 00 E9. A font determines the shape you see.

Is ASCII compatible with Unicode?

Unicode preserves ASCII assignments at U+0000 through U+007F. UTF-8 encodes these values using the same single bytes as ASCII, so ASCII text is valid UTF-8. This byte compatibility does not apply to every Unicode encoding: UTF-16 uses different code units.

Characters such as é, 中 and ♥ fall outside ASCII. UTF-8 can represent them, while strict ASCII encoding cannot. “Extended ASCII” is ambiguous: an 8-bit legacy encoding needs a specific name, such as Windows-1252.

What does Unicode to ASCII conversion mean?

For ASCII-only input, encoding as ASCII preserves the text. For other characters, choose an explicit policy: reject them, replace them, transliterate them, or write escapes. Replacing é with e loses the accent; representing ♥ as an escape preserves a reference to its code point but does not keep the visible heart.

Removing characters silently can damage names and document content. There is no universal lossless conversion of arbitrary Unicode text into literal ASCII characters. Converting to Bijoy, KrutiDev or another legacy font format is a separate mapping problem and requires the exact target format.

Try the difference

Paste A, é and ♥ into the Unicode Converter to inspect their code points and UTF-8 bytes. For decorative letters, use the homepage text converter: it changes supported characters into styled Unicode rather than changing a file encoding.
