Solid stars, outline stars and sparkles
Use ★ and ☆ together when you need filled and empty rating marks. The four-pointed ✦ and ✧ have a sparkle-like shape that works well as a short divider or accent. These are separate Unicode characters, so changing a font does not turn an outline star into a solid one.
Keep ratings understandable
A row of stars can look different across fonts and platforms. If the number of stars communicates a score, include a text label such as “4 out of 5” so the meaning survives font changes and remains clear to readers using assistive technology.
Character reference: Unicode, HTML and CSS
Paste the character directly into text, use a numeric character reference in HTML, or use the CSS escape inside a quoted CSS content value. These are text characters, not images; their appearance and support depend on the font and app.
