Plain ticks and ballot boxes
Use ✓ or ✔ for a standalone check mark. The ballot box characters ☐, ☑ and ☒ include the box as part of the character, which can help align a plain-text checklist. Copying these symbols creates text; it does not create an interactive checkbox in a form.
Explain the status in words
Check and cross marks can mean completion, approval, selection or failure depending on context. Pair them with a short label such as “Complete” or “Unavailable.” The characters ✅, ❌ and ❎ may display as colored emoji, so their appearance can differ from the surrounding text.

Paste the character directly into text, use a numeric character reference in HTML, or use the CSS escape inside a quoted CSS content value. These are text characters, not images; their appearance and support depend on the font and app.
