A dagger is punctuation
The dagger † (U+2020) is a punctuation character often used for footnote references. The Latin cross ✝ (U+271D) is a distinct symbol. Their silhouettes can look similar in some fonts, but they have different Unicode identities and should be selected according to the text’s meaning.
Choose the cross by its form and context
The Orthodox cross ☦, Cross of Lorraine ☨ and Cross of Jerusalem ☩ have different forms and cultural associations. Check the official character name before copying. The multiplication sign × is a mathematical operator, while ✕ and ✖ are cross-shaped dingbats. Use the check mark tool for ballot X characters used in status text.
